Disconnection Protections
Disconnection for non-payment of electric service will be temporarily postponed under certain conditions in accordance with Indiana law (Ind. Code § 8-1-2-121).
This law expands protections for residential customers of all electric utilities, including cooperatives, by maintaining winter protections and adding protections during extreme heat.
Extreme Heat Protection
- When the National Weather Service forecasts a heat index of 95°F or higher at least 48 hours in advance for our service territory:
- Disconnections will be postponed beginning at the time the forecast is issued
- Disconnections will remain postponed for the duration of the extreme heat event
- Disconnections may resume once the forecast no longer predicts a heat index of 95°F or higher
- Jackson County REMC relies on the most recent official forecast when determining when protections begin and end
Winter and LIHEAP Protections
Additional disconnection protections apply during the winter moratorium period and for members who are eligible for or have applied for LIHEAP assistance.
Members are encouraged to apply for assistance as soon as possible.
